Don't get to this stage before you realise that the Important things in life are Friends, Health, and shared experiences
This group is for people who wish to walk between 5 and 7 miles over varied terrain, on a regular basis. Group membership is limited to 20 members. Being a collaborative, it is hoped that each member will lead or be back marker for a walk at least once per year, and also help and assist less confident map readers to reconnoitre walks to lead. There will be a break of about 15mins at some point in the walk, for water and possibly sustenance (often called a banana break). Walkers should be fit enough to cover 7 miles with the break, within 3hrs. The groups walks will generally be within a 16 mile radius of Worcester city centre.
Walks will generally start from a Pub. This being so, walkers are encouraged to car share to minimise the spaces taken on the pub car park and to maintain a greener footprint. Walkers using Pub car parks are expected to at least have a drink in the pub afterwards or join, what is hoped will be the majority, for a light lunch and a wind down chat after the walk. Good relationships with Publicans are best maintained when we don't take up spaces which paying customers could use. Some locations will no longer accept walking groups as this courtesy has not been observed.
When we start from somewhere other than a pub car park, it is anticipated that, after the walk, we will adjourn to a nearby hostelry, to wind down.
Health and safety stuff
From a health and safety perspective, each walker is responsible for their own well being and, that of the person directly in front of them, getting a message to the walk leader or back marker should anything untoward happen. Also when walkers are spread out, each walker is required to ensure that the walker behind them does not miss a turning.
Guide for Walk Leaders;
Walkers should ensure they wear clothing suitable for the conditions. Sometimes it will be muddy (See Picture in the slide show above). It will rain, it can be cold or windy. Layers, sun hats, Boots, Gaiters, Poles (Two or non is advisably safer than one). When using poles ensure they are carried and used with due diligence, We don't want claims for lost eyes or stabbed knee caps.
Where possible, walk leaders will advise on anticipated conditions. Walks may be cancelled in severe conditions. It is intended to set up a WhatsApp group for rapid communication. Also, notification will be as laid out in the following link.
Cancelling a Walk
Walks are planned and led by the group members ensuring a wide variety of locations. Help in planning walks is always available and new walk leaders are encouraged. Newly researched walks are welcome. Alternatively, a library with over fifty walks is available for group members to select from the U3a.
Library of Walks;
It is national u3a policy that dogs are not allowed on any u3a walks.

U3a walking groups also organise a collective annual walking holiday, which is open to members of any walking group, and is on a full board basis in one of the hotels operated by HF Holidays. Each day there is a selection of walks organised by group members providing a choice of terrain and distance.
The UK walking holiday in September 2026 is in the Peak District. (28th September - 2nd October 2026) The HF Hotel is "The Peveril of the Peak" in Dovedale - a beautiful aspect and only 2 hours drive from Worcester. Please contact Louise Radford if you would like more information or would like to book a place.
