This group aims to explore the scope and variety of Western classical music from medieval times to the present day. The key word in the group title is ‘Discovering’, and group members are not required to possess any prior Knowledge of classical music. Members are encouraged to facilitate a collective interactive experience, with everyone being invited to participate should they wish. For example, throughout the programme members will be invited to suggest compositions and / or performers of interest to them which may be presented by themselves or other group members. On occasions, learning will also be promoted through fun quizzes and activities. Each member will be encouraged to pursue their own personal journey of classical music discovery.
During the first year of the group it explored a variety of subjects including master composers, musical instruments, vocal forms of music, differing art forms incorporating classical music, musical styles and historical references to musical types.
This year the programme will continue to explore musical eras, genres, composers and instruments as well as influences made by various countries.
Above all, our overriding aim is to promote enjoyment and fun whilst discovering different dimensions of classical music
Format
The group will meet fortnightly, and will make use of a wide variety of audio-visual aids. There will be opportunities to observe/listen to a selection of musical performances, learn about and discuss the history of Classical Music and recognise key ‘masters’. Members will also be introduced to key technical influences, including the introduction of new instruments and techniques in each musical era. Where time permits, the final part of a session could include a good natured quiz.
