u3a DUPLICATE BRIDGE

Duplicate Bridge is played each week during the u3a season, and players are encouraged to attend the Group (either Red or Black) that they feel most at home with. Some players may choose to play in both groups. In 2024-2025 about 80% chose to attend both groups.

All Duplicate sessions operate as competitions for that afternoon

Results are distributed as soon as possible after the event to all players in the form of:

  • A ranked list showing the scores of players
  • A record of all the "travellers", the documents which record all the bids and results of each game

Sometimes members ask to see some of the hands dealt that week because they have been interesting or challenging.

Here is an example of a hand sent to members of the group:

What is the difference between playing on Red or Black weeks?

Red sessions are for players who wish to play a competition, playing 16 - 21 hands in the afternoon

Black sessions are for players who wish to play a competition at speed, playing 21 - 25 hands in the afternoon

What is Duplicate Bridge?

Duplicate Bridge is a form of Contract Bridge played in all tournaments, in Bridge clubs, and often in the home; it is so called because each hand is played at least twice, although by different players, under the same conditions, with the same cards in each hand and the same dealer and vulnerability.

Each week a separate tournament takes place, and results are distributed by e-mail to those in attendance.
