We are a group that takes a close look at the people and events who have shaped history. A wide spectrum of historical periods are covered. In the 2025-26 year, for example, there have been talks on nineteenth century inventors, politicians and writers; medieval royalty; Tutankhamun; and an everyday observer caught up in Berlin in WW2. Sometimes we have a theme, for example, 'Sisters' where we have looked at the Mitford Sisters and considered whether they would they be regarded as outrageous today; and another session we discussed whether Millicent Fawcett, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Agnes Garrett were more concerned with their careers than their commitment to women's suffrage.

The talks are usually led by the group leader but this coming year many of the members of the group have opted to lead a session and we will be covering an even wider range of topics than usual: Sitting Bull; Edward Colston; The Wright Brothers; Josephine Baker; Caroline of Ansbach and George III to name but a few. The format is a 40 minute introduction to the historical question, a break for coffee, followed by a debate on the subject.

This is a very popular course and there is a waiting list. However, do not let this deter you if you are interested! I am particularly keen on hearing from anyone who might be willing to start up a second group. We have at least 85 talks, together with power points, available for use and many of those who gave the talks would be happy to give them to a second group.
