Movie Nights

“Movies should be like amusement parks – people should go to them to have fun” - Billy Wilder, director of ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Sunset Boulevard’ – and many others.

We' re with Mr Wilder on this. The aim of the group is simply to enjoy good films as entertainment in the company of like-minded others and in a congenial atmosphere.  We are fortunate in benefitting from the Talbot’s excellent cinema-quality film projection equipment and its landlord’s enthusiasm for film.

The group was originally prompted when I realised that despite all the years I've been around there are still several classic films on my personal bucket list that I’ve not got round to seeing yet, plus quite a few that I might have first seen several decades ago but would benefit from a re-visit.  We choose our film programmes democratically with members making suggestions and voting on them; to give an idea of what to expect, some of those we’ve seen in the past year include:-

  • Casablanca
  • One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
  • Shawshank Redemption
  • In the Heat of the Night
  • Goodfellas
  • When Harry Met Sally
  • Annie Hall

… and our programme for the rest of our spring season is going to be:-

  • April 15th:           The Impossible
  • April 29th:          Lee
  • May 13th:            Billy Liar
  • May 27th:           Good Will Hunting
  • June 10th: The Last of the Mohicans

To avoid any confusion, this group is distinct from the Film Appreciation group that meets on Monday afternoons although we share a mutual enjoyment of good cinema, and we’re not competing – quite the opposite, as the ethos of each group is quite different and several of us are members of both groups.

As you’d expect the Talbot offers a well-stocked bar and a comprehensive food menu, so several of us like to make an evening of it and enjoy a meal there before the films start (at 8 p.m.). We also take some pride in being the only Worcester U3A group which meets in the evenings throughout the year, to confound any stereotyping that expects senior citizens to grow old gracefully and settle down at home for the evening as soon as it starts getting dark, huddled in our bath chairs with a blanket over our knees and nursing a mug of Ovaltine 😊!

If you’d like to join, please message me via the link in the group information above, stating your name, U3A membership number, and mobile phone number (if you have one).
